September: Second Chances and Redemption

The series kicks off with a discussion on grace, redemption, poverty, and violence as seen in the award-winning book, Tattoos on the Heart, a priest’s reflections on ministry in one of America’s grittiest neighborhood.

October: Reaching Our Youth
Wednesday, October 4, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

What can we do as a community to support our youth? In advance of World Bully Prevention Day on October 7, the Beloved Community is hosting a discussion panel on what kids need from their parents and adult leaders and what questions should we be asking our kids.

November: Access to Affordable Housing
Saturday, November 18, 8:00 a.m., La Plata Town Hall

Join us in for this annual fundraiser and walk in downtown La Plata to benefit the “Safe Nights” winter shelter program.

December: Erasing the Stigma around Opioid Addiction
Tuesday, December 5, 6:30 p.m.

How can the Church reduce the stigma surrounding substance abuse and support individuals and families affected by the opioid crisis and?  Join us for the screening of a new documentary addressing the crisis in Southern Maryland followed by a panel discussion with representatives from the Sheriff’s Office, County Health Department, and Emergency Services. There will be a training and distribution of Narcan opioid reversal kits. 

January: Mental Illness in Our Community

Mental illness affects millions of Americans, but so many people still don’t talk about it. This month we partner with local experts and ask: How can we support each other?  What resources are there?

February: Poverty and Economic Justice
Wednesday, February 21, 6:30 p.m.

Join us for a screening and discussion of the documentary, The Line: Poverty in America. It’s Not What You Think.

March: How to Cherish and Nourish the Gift of Physical Health

What are the barriers limiting the physical wellbeing of all God’s people and how can we respond as a Christian community? This month the Beloved Community will host a healthy recipe swap and establish St. Paul’s Fitness Warrior Teams.

April: Environmental Justice
Saturday, April 21, 9:00 a.m. 

God calls us to be good stewards of creation. This month we will look at issues affecting our local environment and spend a day cleaning up a local park and lake followed by a picnic. 

May: Violence in Our Communities
Wednesday, May 9, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Join us for a panel discussion exploring the types of violence existing in our community and how you can help.

June: Jesus Was a Refugee
Wednesday, June 6, 6:30-8:00 p.m.
