Rector: The Rev. Dr. Maria A. Kane (

Mother Maria Kane has served as St. Paul’s rector (pastor) since 2014. After spending her childhood in Texas, Maria earned degrees in history and classical civilization at Howard University and a Master of Divinity at Duke University. She completed her Ph.D. in history at The College of William and Mary. Her dissertation, “Pretty Girls and Fascinating Boys,” is a historical and ethnographic analysis on the intersection of race, nationalism, and sexuality in the spiritual and moral formation of adolescent evangelicals in the United States from 1970 to 2010.  Prior to arriving at St. Paul’s, Mother Maria served as a parish priest in Williamsburg and as a boarding school chaplain & teacher in New Hampshire. She finds immeasurable joy in hearing people’s stories, walking alongside them in joy and sorrow, and learning to live in the questions. Maria has written for WeavingsAlive Now!, and the Upper Room and served as one of Lent Madness’ Celebrity Bloggers for two years. Maria’s favorite forms of relaxation are gardening, kayaking, hiking, reading, cheering on her godchildren, and pretending that she’s a much better cyclist than she really is.  Although she enjoys living in the Mid-Atlantic area, she never stops yearning for authentic Tex-Mex and chicken fried steak.
